The Sorrowful Mysteries

Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Act of Contrition

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you, and I detest all my sins because of your just punishments, but most of all because they offend you, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of your grace, to sin no more and to avoid the near occasions of sin. Amen. O my God, I am sorry and repent with all my heart for all the wrong I have done and for the good I have failed to do, because by sinning I have offended you, who are all good and worthy to be loved above all things. I firmly resolve, with the help of your grace, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid the occasions of sin. Through the merits of the Passion of our Savior Jesus Christ, Lord, have mercy. have mercy on me, a sinner.

Our Father

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary for Faith

For the increase of faith. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Glory Be (Doxology)

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be world without end. Amen.

1st Sorrowful Mystery

Jesus prays in agony to His heavenly Father.

Mt 26:36-46

In the garden, alone, Jesus sweats drops of blood. The disciples sleep. He sees clearly what is coming and asks the Father to take this cup away. And then: not my will, but yours. We meditate on the loneliness of the faithful heart, on prayer that does not erase fear but walks through it, and on a Savior who knows what it is to dread.

Amen.

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Thy mercy.

2nd Sorrowful Mystery

Jesus is scourged at the pillar.

Mt 27:26

He is bound to a pillar and beaten until the flesh is torn. The body that the Word made is broken before our eyes. By his stripes we are healed, the prophet had said. We meditate on the price of mercy, on every wound the world carries, and on a love that does not flinch from the lash.

Amen.

3rd Sorrowful Mystery

Jesus is crowned with thorns.

Mt 27:27-31

They press a crown of thorns onto his head and put a reed in his hand and laugh. Behold the king. They do not know that they have spoken truer than they meant. He is a king, and his crown is precisely this. We meditate on every mockery, every hidden insult, every place we are despised — and on the kingship that is born of being willing to bear them.

Amen.

Fatima Prayer

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Thy mercy.

4th Sorrowful Mystery

Jesus carries His cross to Calvary.

Lk 23:26-32

He carries the wood up to the place of the skull. He stumbles. He stumbles again. A stranger is pressed to help. His mother meets him along the road, and a single look passes between them. We meditate on every burden too heavy to bear alone, on those who carry the cross beside us, and on a God who walks the whole road, fall by fall.

Amen.

Fatima Prayer

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Thy mercy.

5th Sorrowful Mystery

Jesus is crucified and dies on the cross.

Lk 23:33-46

He is nailed to the wood and lifted up. He forgives the men who drive the nails. He gives his mother to the disciple, and the disciple to his mother. He cries out, thirsts, and at last says: it is finished. The veil of the temple tears. We meditate on the love that loves to the end, and on the silence of a world that has just been redeemed and does not yet know it.

Amen.

Fatima Prayer

Closing prayers

Hail, Holy Queen (Salve Regina)

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

Concluding Prayer of the Holy Rosary

O God, whose Only Begotten Son, by his life, Death, and Resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, grant, we beseech thee, that while meditating on these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
