Praying the Joyful Mysteries

Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Our Father

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary for Faith

For the increase of faith. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Hail Mary for Hope

For the strengthening of hope. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Hail Mary for Charity

For the perfection of charity. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Glory Be (Doxology)

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be world without end. Amen.

1st Joyful Mystery

The angel Gabriel announces to Mary that she is to be the Mother of God.

Lk 1:26-38

An angel speaks to a young woman in an ordinary town, and the world turns. Mary does not weigh the cost. She does not ask for a sign. She says yes — fiat — and in that single word the eternal Word becomes flesh inside her. We meditate on the courage of her trust, on a God who waits to be invited, and on every small yes that opens our own life to grace.

Amen.

Fatima Prayer

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Thy mercy.

2nd Joyful Mystery

Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth.

Lk 1:39-56

Mary travels in haste through the hill country to her cousin Elizabeth. Carrying Christ within her, she goes not to be served but to serve. At the sound of her greeting an unborn child leaps for joy. We meditate on how the presence of Jesus, even hidden, sets the world rejoicing — and on the kind of love that walks out of itself toward someone in need.

Amen.

3rd Joyful Mystery

Jesus is born in a stable in Bethlehem.

Lk 2:1-20

There was no room. The Word through whom the stars were made is laid in a feeding trough for animals. The shepherds come — the unwashed, the unimportant — and they are the first to be told. Heaven is not afraid of poverty; heaven seeks it out. We meditate on a God who chooses smallness, and on the cradle that already foreshadows the cross.

Amen.

4th Joyful Mystery

Jesus is presented in the Temple.

Lk 2:22-38

Mary and Joseph bring the infant Jesus to the temple. Old Simeon, who has waited his whole life, takes the child in his arms and finally is ready to die. He blesses the parents and warns the mother: a sword will pierce your heart. Joy and sorrow are already woven together. We meditate on the long obedience of waiting, and on hearts that say yes even to the sword.

Amen.

5th Joyful Mystery

Jesus is found in the Temple among the teachers.

Lk 2:41-52

Three days they search for him, sick with worry. They find him in the temple, calmly listening and questioning. Did you not know I must be in my Father's house? Even his mother does not yet understand. We meditate on the moments when those we love slip beyond our grasp — into a calling that is not ours to control — and on how Mary keeps these things, and ponders them in her heart.

Amen.

Closing prayers

Hail, Holy Queen (Salve Regina)

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

Concluding Prayer of the Holy Rosary

O God, whose Only Begotten Son, by his life, Death, and Resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, grant, we beseech thee, that while meditating on these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
